Barebells splits into two meaningfully different product lines. The Vegan line (Hazelnut Nougat, Caramel Peanut, Fudge Brownie, Caramel Choco Chip) is a different product that scores significantly worse. Three of the four Vegan flavors use hydrolyzed wheat gluten as the primary protein source. The Soft Bar variants (Marshmallow Peanut Road, Salted Peanut Caramel, Minty Chocolate, Caramel Choco, Banana Caramel) have a slightly different protein composition with micellar casein isolate and whey protein hydrolysate. Some also add xylitol on top of maltitol, which is what pulls those specific flavors lower on the score chart. The core standard bars are the ones to stick with if ingredient quality is the goal.

Why the grades span B to F: two very different products

The B-to-F range is not a quirk. Barebells runs two product lines that have almost nothing in common from an ingredient standpoint, and they happen to sell under the same name.

The standard dairy bars lead with a protein blend of casein, whey isolate, and whey concentrate. That is a solid protein source, and it earns real credit in our scoring even with the maltitol and sucralose that follow. Most of these land B or C.

The vegan bars are a different story. Three of the four vegan flavors use hydrolyzed wheat gluten as their first protein ingredient. Hydrolyzed wheat gluten is a heavily processed derivative that scores poorly. On top of that, several of these bars have maltitol at position 2 and maltitol syrup at position 6, which means two separate sugar alcohol sources stacked in the top half of the ingredient list. That is what pushes them to D and F, not some rounding error.

Hazelnut Nougat is the one vegan exception. It leads with soy, pea, and rice protein isolates instead of wheat gluten, which is why it grades D rather than F.

Barebells earns its reputation for protein and low sugar. 20g protein and 1-2g sugar in the standard line is genuinely strong, and calories stay in a tight 200-210 range. The tradeoff is 5-12g of sugar alcohols per bar, primarily maltitol, which contributes to the very low sugar number but can cause digestive discomfort in some people.

The standard dairy lineup delivers 20g protein and 1-2g sugar in a 200-210 calorie bar, and the protein source (casein and whey isolates) is genuinely quality. If you are prioritizing protein efficiency and low sugar and you are comfortable with artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols, the core Barebells line is competitive with the best options in our database.

The Vegan line is a separate conversation. Hydrolyzed wheat gluten is not a quality protein source in our scoring system, and the D and F grades on those flavors reflect that clearly. They are not a cleaner version of the bar. They are a different product built around a lower-quality protein foundation.
