Most protein bar comparisons pit two or three brands against each other. This page covers all of them. Every brand in the database is here, grouped into six categories based on macros, then ranked by protein per 100 calories within each group. Ingredient quality scores come from the same scoring system used across the whole site, the same one that grades individual flavors.

All values are averages across scored flavors. Typical grade = most common grade across a brand's flavors. P/100 Cal = grams of protein per 100 calories.
How the Categories Work
Six categories, each defined by macro thresholds rather than brand reputation or marketing claims. A brand ends up where its numbers put it.
Protein First
10+ grams of protein per 100 calories, under 210 average calories. These bars are built specifically around protein delivery. Most use sugar alcohols to keep carbs and calories low. David, Quest, and No Cow are the recognizable names here. Gryp and Promix are smaller brands worth checking out if ingredient quality matters to you.
Solid Macro Profile
Between 8 and 10g protein per 100 calories, under 230 calories. Good balance of protein and total calories without going to extremes. This is where Barebells, Pure Protein, and think! live. These are mainstream options with reasonable numbers. Some like Jacob and Gutsy punch above their weight on ingredient quality.
Whole Food / High Fiber
5g+ fiber per bar, under 230 calories. These bars lean on nuts, seeds, oats, and dried fruit rather than protein isolates. Protein is moderate. RXBAR, IQ Bar, and KIND live here. Ingredient scores in this category tend to be cleaner than in the higher-protein tiers. The trade-off is protein efficiency.
Balanced Middle
Solid protein efficiency (5-8g per 100 cal) but slightly higher calories, generally 190 to 250 range. Many of these are legitimate daily options. FITCRUNCH, One Bar, and Aloha are in this bucket. Some surprises here on ingredient quality. RXBAR-adjacent brands like Send and Supervibe score very high.
Snack / Low Protein
Under 5g protein per 100 calories. Not all of these are bad choices. Perfect Bar, Larabar, Bearded Bros, and Thunderbird are in this category, and several have clean ingredient scores. They just were not designed around protein delivery. Know what you're getting.
Meal Replacement / High Cal
250+ average calories per bar. Designed for higher-output athletes or as genuine meal replacements. Clif Bar, GoMacro, and Perfect Bar are here. Protein efficiency drops, but total protein can still be reasonable. Ingredient quality is the real variable in this group. It ranges from excellent (Off the Farm, Forward, 1st Phorm) to avoid (Gatorade, Ghost).
Common Questions
Protein per 100 calories tells you how efficiently a bar delivers protein relative to its calorie cost. A bar with 20g protein and 200 calories scores 10.0, better than a bar with 20g protein and 280 calories, which scores 7.1. Higher is better if you want maximum protein without surplus calories.
Each bar is scored on a numeric scale based on ingredient quality. A means the ingredients are clean with minimal processing. B is good. C is okay but has some concerns. D is poor. F means avoid. The grade shown for each brand is the most common grade across that brand's flavors, so a brand with 10 C-grade and 2 B-grade flavors shows C.
Based on average ingredient scores across all flavors, brands like Gryp, Jacob, Par Bar, Gutsy, Healthy Eating on the Go, and Off the Farm score highest. Many smaller or newer brands outperform the mainstream names on ingredient quality. The ingredient score column in the table lets you sort by this directly.
Sugar alcohols are common in bars marketed as low-sugar or keto-friendly. David, Quest, Barebells, Legendary, and Gryp use them in all or most flavors. These show 100% in the sugar alcohol column. Whether to avoid them depends on your gut tolerance. Some people experience digestive issues with high doses, particularly with maltitol.
Net carbs = Total Carbohydrates minus Fiber minus half of Sugar Alcohols. We use the half-credit formula for sugar alcohols because their glycemic impact varies by type. This is the formula most commonly used in low-carb communities and on nutrition labels in some markets.
This database covers 125 distinct brands across 983 scored flavors. The market is heavily fragmented. For weight loss, look at the Protein First and Solid Macro Profile categories. They deliver the most protein per calorie, which helps with satiety. David, Quest, Promix, and Fiber One lead on protein efficiency. Pair a high P/100 score with a decent ingredient grade to avoid ultra-processed options in the same tier.
